Whoa! Are you all really Seniors! I can honestly remember all of you as Freshman (being your sponsor and all)! You guys have come a long way! This year will be your most amazing yet, as you are looking forward to beginning your semi-adult life. It can also be nerve-racking, which is why I'm here for you. I'm here to help guide you through the world of applying for scholarships and college. Also, for the extras like choosing a place to live, choosing the right meal plan for you, and the utmost importance of having a planner!
I'm so glad that you're in my Senior Seminar. I can't wait to see what awesome things you choose to do going forward with your life. I've posted the assignments for two weeks. We will be discussing how to manage your time while in college. Many will find that managing your time is one of the hardest skills to learn your first year at college. There are many different things vying for your time: social activities, new friends, no curfew, first time living away from parents, job, extra homework...the list goes on. There are many different tips and tricks for managing your time, so decide on the one that works best for you. I've included an article from U.S. News that includes the Top 12 tips for time management for college students. I've also included a Google Worksheet for you to fill in as you read.
Who knows what Bursar is? Those are just one of the many words that are used often on college campuses. I'm not really sure I knew what I Bursar was until I looked at this glossary! :) I've included a list of commonly used words on campus. I encourage you to look over the list. There are many words on there that you will only hear on a college campus. I've also created a crossword puzzle with the words to help you remember them a bit better! Hang on. We are almost halfway done with this semester!! YAY! On Google Classroom, a Nearpod lesson has been posted about the ACTUAL cost of college. When you think about paying for college, you need to be thinking of other costs like clothing, food, books, school supplies, health costs, etc. Most students do not think about budgeting for these costs. Work through the lesson to calculate your own ACTUAL costs for attending college. See Google Classroom for more information.
There are no assignments for this week. Please focus on applying for colleges, and filling out scholarships applications.
For weeks 13-14, the focus will be building your resume. We will be working with CollegeforTN.org to build your resume, and export it to Word. If you've completed a resume recently for another class, feel free to use it rather than use CollegeforTN.org. Please see Google Classroom for the complete assignment.
For the next two weeks, we will be focusing on getting your resumes completed using the resume generator on CollegeforTN.org. If you've already generated a resume for another class, please feel free to use that resume, and not use the resume generator. Please see Google Classroom for all details.
A representative from the State of TN will be at LA this week to talk specifics in regards to the TN Promise program to ensure that all knows about the requirements. Also, the Upper Cumberland College Fair will be hosted at the TN Tech Hyder Burkes Pavilion. So, in light of all of the activities going on this week, you will have 2 weeks for the assignment. This week, we will begin focusing on building your resume. There is a tool on collegefortn.org that is very helpful when developing your resume. This tool also allows the resume to be converted to a Microsoft Word document when resume building is complete!
This week, we will be discussing how to pay for college. We will also discuss how to decode those pesky financial aid award letters that you will be receiving soon after you complete the FAFSA. The following assignments will be posted on Classroom:
